Design & Copyright
While patent protection provides protection for technical concepts which may have many different embodiments, and trade mark protection offers protection for signs used in commerce in relation to goods and services, design and copyright protection is directed towards the visual appearance and aesthetic qualities of a product or a particular expression of an idea in the form of, for example a written or graphical work.
Various forms of protection are available for such visual qualities and expressions, some of which involve a formal application procedure, while others arise in response to creation of the design/work.
